conductor- the age of steel
Just pulled my first all-nighter. Website and cataloguing assignments are finished, turned in, and officially out-of-mind. Sleep-cycle totally screwed, so I might as well get on the Internet, yes/yes?

seren_ccd prompted me to create a television show full of pretty, pretty people. So here it is! (gosh this thing kind of got away from me. Enjoy this over-involved premise!)

Coming this fall to HBO (Hopelessly Boring Operations), from the writer of Blood on the Saddle, a new programme about family and betrayal, loyalty and power, and the things we do to keep our world in order...

In 1833, Charles Babbage changed the fabric of Victorian England with the construction of his Difference Machine. With the help of Ada Lovelace, proto-computer programmer, the Industrial Revolution accelerated at hitherto unimaginable rates. Technology spawned unimagined machines, driven by steam and the Empire's thirst for conquest. Propelled by the cold, mindless calculations of the Machine Brains, English technology has crossed the Atlantic and retaken part of its old colonies, the Americas. But the cogs of revolution never fully cease turning...

The year is 1842. In twelve months, Queen Victoria plans to land in the provisional capitol of New London for the Steel Anniversary celebration. But there are stirring in the criminal underground. A group of nationalists termed the Movement are experimenting with a new and volatile power source. Based on the outlawed writings of Tesla and Faraday, this band of outlaws is developing a force not even steam can conquer. They call it 'electricity.'

Quinn Hawkins

Newly arrived in the American territories from the prison colony of New Zealand, Hawkins finds work in the Industrial factories that build the levers and gears of the New Age. Hawkins wants nothing more than to forget everything he left behind. But accusations of murder are tough to shake...

Valeria Kingston

The jewel of New London high society, Valeria attends charitable functions, social ethics committees, and funds the underground revolutionary movement. In the past, her contributions to the Movement have taken place in well-lit drawing rooms. With the advent of the Steel Anniversary, however, she may have to get her kid gloves dirty.

Oskar Kingston

Valeria's brother and a devoted Royalist. He looked after his sister after their parents' deaths, raising their tiny family from nothing by aligning himself with factory higher-ups. While he doesn't approve of their methods or the use of factory products, he stays loyal out of fear of retribution against Valeria.

Annis Weaver

Follow the chain of command in any factory far enough up and you'll find Annis Weaver. Her Majesty's woman in New London, Weaver will do whatever is necessary to keep herself from social and political oblivion, even at the price of her fellow countrymen.

Malachi Helves

A member of Her Majesty's Custodial Marshals, Helve is duty-bound to stamp out anyone caught whispering about electricity. While he excels at his job, he finds himself a man divide, as his dreams of lightning get more vivid and frequent. He's afraid he's a ceraunoscopist like his incarcerated sister, able to predict and divine the future with lightning, and unless he wants to end up committed like her, he must keep this a secret.

Dorian Pelling

The mechanical brains of the Movement. A devotee of Tesla, he is the central architect of the "dynamo," the first machine to produce electricity in the American territories. His technical skill makes him both very dangerous to the Marshals and very valuable to the Movement.

Emery Florida

A representative of the Southern Movement, Emery brings both invaluable intel and divided loyalties to the Movement. Her primary concern is the welfare of the forgotten Confederate territories, not the wealth-infused excesses of New London.

Wow, this...this got kind of out of hand. I have backstory for this whole thing, too. Like, verified alternate history timelines in my head. The trick would be not to bash the British (UK! ILU! Even if you don't love me back!), but to focus on the interplay of family and national loyalty as well as playing up the SCIENCE! aspect.

...I just re-read that sentence. I'm the world's biggest dork, and am starting to realize why all the TV shows I like get cancelled.

Anyways, comment and tell me who you'd write shippy, shippy fic about!

YAY!! OMG, and Rickman!Inquisitor and Annis Weaver would have some shady, shady past and TONS of UST.

And Joseph Smith would be a fake ceraunoscopist, which would piss off Malachi to no end, but he couldn't say anything without exposing himself.

Eee! I'm glad you liked it!

OMG. This is freaking BRILLIANT. I would so watch this! I would geek-out and fangasm and squee and write shippy shippy fic. About Quinn and Valeria. And Oskar and Emery.

I did this meme a few days ago - it is so much fun!

Eee! Exciting!

Ooh Oskar/Emery sounds epic!

If I were writing, I'd eventually start working in little hints about the ship, partially to bait the fans (aka encourage fic) and partially because SO MUCH GUILT! Oh that would rock. He'd be so TORN and she'd kind of HATE HIM. UNF. J'adore!

Oh, my freakin' LORD!! This is brilliant! See? This is the world I want to live in: where we create the shows. I have no coherent thoughts other than: AWESOME.

Woot!! All for you, m'dearie, all for you!

And Dorian would have this horrific unrequited crush on Emery, and I'd ship Malachi with just...just everyone, and wonder why there wasn't more Emery/Valeria hate!femmeslash. And his sister would be played by Grace Park and be super!nuts and Quinn/Adelaide Helves would be my secret crack!ship.

One of these days, I'm gonna have to get your real name, seren-y :) !

Yes! Yes to all of this including Grace Park! Oh my god. If she and John Cho ever appear onscreen at the same time, I think I'd spontaneously combust. :D

I'm still plotting the one you gave me... At the moment, Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy are giving each other smoldering glances across a court room, so...

(It's Claire! :D)

AHAHA YES YES YES smouldering looks! Court houses! This is reminding me to write up that blessed Red Eye/Inception fic!! And why don't I have a Jackson/Lisa icon, for pete's sake?!?

(Hi Claire! I'm Penny!! Pleased to meet you!)
